Combating climate change and Britain's reparations for countries affected by the slave trade are key topics at the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting - CHOGM) in the Pacific country of Samoa, reported Reuters.
Leaders of 56 countries that were part of the British Empire or are still subject to Britain are taking part in the forum, which was also attended by Britain's King Charles III. The foreign ministers of these countries already had a meeting today.
"Climate change is a threat to our existence. This is the number one threat to the inhabitants of the Pacific region, as well as to many member states of the Commonwealth of Nations", Australian Foreign Minister Penny Wong said today at a press conference after the meeting with her colleagues within the framework of the forum.
On the issue of reparations for the slave trade going back in time, British Prime Minister Keir Starmer said on Monday that he would not put the issue on the agenda of the summit of the Commonwealth of Nations (formerly known as the Commonwealth), but would discussed the topic with leaders willing to do so, Reuters recalled.
