Early this morning Israeli forces hit targets in the southern suburbs of Beirut for the first time in nearly a week, DPA reported.
At least 11 airstrikes hit the suburb of Dahiya, starting around 02:00 local time, Lebanese security forces and witnesses said. A DPA reporter saw black smoke rising over the area. Explosions were heard in different areas of the Lebanese capital.
A few hours earlier, the Israeli armed forces had announced that they would attack targets of the Lebanese Shiite movement "Hezbollah" in the southern suburbs of Beirut. The armed forces published two maps with targets marked on them and urged local residents to maintain a distance of at least 500 meters from buildings marked as targets.
The information about the strikes on the southern suburbs of Beirut was announced at a time when Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu met yesterday with American representatives who came to Israel to contribute to the ceasefire in Lebanon, notes France Presse.
Israel says that with its military operation against "Hezbollah" in South Lebanon aims to guarantee the return of 60 thousand Israelis to Northern Israel, who were forced to evacuate in order not to fall victim to the constant shelling from the territory of Lebanon, which began after the beginning of the war in the Gaza Strip.
Israel launched its military operation against the Palestinian Islamist movement "Hamas" in the Gaza Strip, after on October 7 last year, fighters of "Hamas" carried out an unprecedented attack on the Jewish state.
After the start of the war in Gaza "Hezbollah" began shelling Israel to demonstrate its solidarity with "Hamas".
The Israeli armed forces said today that at night they intercepted a drone over the territory of Syria, which was moving towards Israel, reported Reuters. The drone was intercepted before entering Israeli airspace.
