Russian President Vladimir Putin commented on the decision to recount the votes of the first round of the presidential election in Romania. This is reported by Digi24, referring to the Spanish news agency EFE.
„The authorities did not like one candidate and they decided to repeat the vote counting,” Putin said during a televised meeting with young scientists.
Last Thursday (November 28), the court asked the Central Electoral Bureau to recount the votes from the first round of the presidential election – a decision that the Romanian media described as unprecedented for the country. It came after two separate appeals seeking the annulment of the vote filed in the Constitutional Court by two candidates who participated in the first round of the election.
Calin Georgescu won the first round of the presidential election with almost 23 percent, ahead of pro-European candidate Elena Lasconi, who came second. She received just 2,740 more votes than Social Democratic Prime Minister Marcel Cholaku, who came in third. Georgescu and Lasconi will face a runoff on December 8.
