Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Sa'ar confirmed today that in recent days his country has carried out strikes aimed at destroying "chemical weapons" in Syria to prevent them from falling into the hands of the radical Islamist rebels who overthrew President Bashar Assad, reported France Press, quoted by BTA.
"Those opposing Damascus today are driven by an extreme ideology of radical Islam, and that is why we have attacked strategic weapons systems in Syria such as remnants of chemical weapons or long-range missiles to keep them out of the hands of extremists", Saar said at a press conference in Jerusalem.
"As for the new masters of Damascus and given their past, our expectations are realistic and we will monitor the measures and actions they take," the Israeli foreign minister said.
"The only thing we care about is the security of Israel and its citizens," he added.
In addition to the strikes on Syria, in recent days Israel has issued an order for the army to take control of the buffer zone of Syrian territory that borders the Israeli-occupied and annexed part of the Golan Heights.
According to data from the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, Israel carried out several strikes last night on military positions and weapons depots in several regions of Syria after the escape of Bashar Assad.
