Kallas: The overthrow of the regime in Syria proves Russia's weakness and the need for a united EU - 1

„What happened in Syria shows that Russia is not invincible. We should not underestimate our own strength,“ said Kaya Kallas, referring to the overthrow of Bashar Assad's regime on December 8 by rebel groups after a 13-year civil war, News.bg reports.

EU unity - key to global influence

Kallas stressed the importance of unity in the European Union as a way to maintain its role as an important player on the international stage. „We see a struggle between forces that want a world in which „might is right,“ and the EU, which strives for a rules-based order where the strong cannot simply take what they want,” she said.

The weakness of Assad’s allies

EU leaders described the fall of the regime in Syria as a positive sign for the country’s future. They said the events revealed the weakness of the support that Bashar Assad had received from his main allies – Russia and Iran.

Plans to limit Russian influence

Kallas announced that the EU would consider options for cooperation with the new leadership in Syria, including closing Russian military bases in the region. The move is seen as a significant gesture to deter Russian influence in the Middle East.

Standing for European values

According to Kallas, the EU's actions in Syria prove its readiness to stand up for its core values in international politics. “This is an important sign of how Europe can defend its principles on the international stage,“ she said.

Kaja Kallas reminded that the European Union should not doubt its capabilities and strength, especially in times of geopolitical tension. She stressed the need for unity and coordinated action to maintain Europe's position as a defender of the rules-based international order.
