Poland has summoned the Hungarian ambassador in response to Budapest's decision to grant political asylum to former Polish Deputy Justice Minister Marcin Romanowski. Accused of misusing public funds, Romanowski denies the charges, but the act has caused serious tension between the two EU allies, quoted by News.bg.
The Polish Foreign Ministry called the decision a "hostile act" and said it contradicts the principles of loyal cooperation in the EU. Poland insists that Hungary comply with its European obligations, otherwise Warsaw will request intervention from the European Commission.
The Hungarian government, for its part, claims that the decision is in accordance with domestic and EU legislation. The representative of Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán accused the Polish government of using the judicial system for political persecution.
The political contradictions between the two allies, traditionally close in their Eurosceptic stance, raise questions about the stability of the regional partnership within the EU.
