The number of homeless people in the United States has risen to the highest level in history. This was announced by the US Department of Housing and Urban Development.
According to the department's report, 771,480 people in the country were homeless in January 2024, which is an increase of 18% on an annual basis. For comparison, in January 2023, the number of people in the US without housing and forced to live on the streets, in shelters, temporary shelters or in a car exceeded 650,000.
It is also noted that in 2024 The number of homeless people in families with children increased by 39%, to 259,473.
The report attributes the increase in homelessness to factors such as a lack of affordable housing, inflation and stagnant wage growth. The health crisis and natural disasters have also had a negative impact on the situation.
