Four earthquakes were registered this morning in the area of the Greek island of Crete, the online edition of the newspaper "Kathimerini" reported, citing the Institute of Geodynamics at the National Observatory in Athens, BTA reports.
The initial earthquake with a magnitude of 2.3 was registered at 10:01 a.m. 19 kilometers east of Crete, at a depth of 25.8 kilometers.
A minute later, two stronger earthquakes with magnitudes of 4.4 and 4.3 followed, which were registered at a distance of 24 and 29 kilometers northeast of the island, respectively. The depth of these tremors was 17.7 and 17.1 kilometers, respectively.
The fourth earthquake with a magnitude of 4.3 was recorded at 10:29, 15 kilometers east of the ancient settlement of Zakros at a depth of 5 kilometers. All of these earthquakes occurred in the sea, near Zakros - an area known for its frequent, but usually weak, seismic activity.
According to initial information, the tremors were not felt in the major cities of the island.
