Negotiations between Israel and the Palestinian Hamas movement to release hostages held in the Gaza Strip and for a ceasefire are making "some but slow progress", the Jerusalem Post reported, citing a source.

Hamas has not yet provided a list of the remaining hostages, he said. The militants say they cannot quickly reach all the hostages and will need several days after the truce to compile a complete list.

"This is a false claim. Hamas has the ability to do it now, they just don't want to give us the list," an Israeli official said.

Several rounds of talks to release Hamas hostages have reached a deadlock.

The parties have failed to extend an agreement reached in late November 2023, under which 105 hostages were released during a week-long truce.

Israel believes that 96 of the 251 hostages kidnapped on October 7, 2023, are still in Gaza. Over the past 14 months, the Israeli military has rescued eight hostages and returned the bodies of 38.
