After the failure of coalition talks between the Austrian People's Party (AWP) and the Austrian Social Democratic Party (ASDP) to form a government, electronic media published the first reactions of politicians and political scientists to the newly created complex situation in the country, BTA reported.
For the leader of the Greens, Werner Kogler, the behavior of the NEOS party, but also of the AWP and the ASDP, is “unacceptable and irresponsible“, the parties are putting their own interests before the interests of the republic.
In a press release, the mayor of Vienna and deputy chairman of the ASDP, Michael Ludwig, stated: “In dramatic times, we had to step over the shadow and make compromises“. He warns that the participation of the Austrian Freedom Party (AFP) in the government “would shake the foundations of liberal democracy“. Ludwig recalls: “Karl Nehammer has always refused to be a proxy for Chancellor Kickl. After the failure of the coalition negotiations with the SPD, however, this very scenario threatens to come true.“
As political observers have noted in comments on the current domestic political situation, in recent days former Chancellor Sebastian Kurz has been increasingly mentioned as the successor to the party leadership in the AFP - in the hope that he will be able to oppose the leader of the AFP, Herbert Kickl, who is clearly leading in the polls. There are also suggestions that there is a possibility that a politician who would negotiate a coalition with Herbert Kickl will be placed at the head of the AFP. Tomorrow morning, the ANP leadership will meet to decide on the party's further actions.
In its first reaction, APS leader Herbert Kickl called Karl Nehammer, Andreas Babler and President Alexander Van der Bellen failures. “They were the architects of the losing traffic light system and are now faced with the ruins of their strategy to obstruct Kickl. Instead of a quickly formed government, we now have three lost months, and instead of stability, we have chaos“. According to Kickl, the federal president is forced to act.
As reported by the media, federal president Alexander Van der Bellen will announce tomorrow what steps he will take in the current situation.
