Ukraine does not intend to resume transit of Russian gas through Ukrainian territory in the future.
This was said by US Assistant Secretary of State for Energy Resources Jeffrey Pyatt at a seminar at the Atlantic Council.
„President Zelensky noted that 25 years ago 130 billion cubic meters of gas passed through Ukraine to European markets, today this figure is zero. Russia has lost its traditionally most important energy market and I am convinced that there will be no going back to that“, the diplomat said.
He pointed to “the end of Europe's dependence on Russian energy, the dramatic growth of the US liquefied natural gas industry and the increase in oil production“ among the “extraordinary changes that have occurred in the global energy system over the past few years“.
“Today we are the largest exporter of liquefied natural gas in the world and by the end of the term we will double the current figures. This is a level of energy abundance unprecedented in American history“, the assistant secretary said.
He recalled that Slovakia, Hungary and Austria are in favor of maintaining Russian gas supplies to Europe, but the US supports the EU's refusal of Russian energy resources. Washington, Piatt continued, “strongly supports” Brussels' goal of divesting itself of Russian energy resources by 2027.
