Ukraine praised U.S. President Donald Trump for threatening to impose tariffs and sanctions on Russia if it refuses to sign a deal to end the war, Reuters reported.
Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andriy Szybiga said the comment sent a "strong signal."
Trump, who has repeatedly said he wants to end the fighting in Ukraine but has not specified how, has called on Russian President Vladimir Putin to "stop this ridiculous war" and threatened to impose punitive measures if an agreement is not reached.
"We really welcome such strong messages from President Trump and we believe he will emerge victorious. "We think we have an additional chance to get a new dynamic in diplomatic efforts to end this war," Sibiga said at a panel discussion in Davos, Switzerland.
Kiev has long called on its allies to impose tougher sanctions on Russia to increase the cost of the war for Moscow and discourage it from further aggression.
Moscow said it saw nothing new in Trump's threat but was closely monitoring "all the nuances" in his rhetoric and remains open to dialogue.
When asked about Trump's comments, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said the American had often imposed sanctions on Russia during his first term as president.
Trump's calls to end the war as soon as possible have raised concerns in Kiev and among European allies that a hasty agreement could favor Russia and force Ukraine to make major territorial and other concessions.
Kiev has repeatedly stressed the importance of an agreement that would lead to a just and lasting peace.
