Starmer welcomes European leaders, urges them to spend more on defense - 1

British Prime Minister Keir Starmer plans to call on European leaders to spend more on their military needs at a meeting in London today, Bloomberg reported.

According to the agency, during his speech at the summit, the British Prime Minister will tell the invited European leaders that they must adopt a realistic approach to defense spending and that “well-considered speeches“ in support of Ukraine will not be enough to convince US President Donald Trump to provide security guarantees to Kiev after his dispute with Volodymyr Zelensky at the White House.

Starmer, French President Emmanuel Macron and several other European leaders hope to reach an agreement on stronger security commitments so that, according to the agency, they can then sit down at the table to resolve the conflict in Ukraine.

The leaders of Germany, Denmark, Spain, Italy, Canada, the Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Romania, Finland, France, the Czech Republic, Sweden, as well as Volodymyr Zelensky, the head of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen, the President of the European Council Antonio Costa and NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte have been invited to today's meeting to discuss achieving peace in Ukraine in London.

Turkey will be represented by Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan.

The British government said the countries would discuss, among other things, military support for the authorities in Kiev and increased economic pressure on Russia.
