France and Poland sign mutual defense treaty in case of military threat - 1

Poland and France will sign a treaty committing to mutual assistance in case of military threat. This was announced by Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk, quoted by Reuters, reports News.bg.

The agreement is concluded against the backdrop of growing concerns about security in Europe after the Russian invasion of Ukraine, as well as against the backdrop of doubts about the long-term commitment of the United States to the security of the continent, especially in the event of a possible return of Donald Trump to the presidency.

The agreement between France and Poland covers key areas such as defense, energy, including nuclear, and transport. Donald Tusk said that in the event of a threat to one of the two countries, they would provide each other with assistance, including military assistance. According to him, the provisions of the treaty are “innovative from the point of view of our security“.

He added that the new agreement opens the way for cooperation, which could potentially lead to the expansion of the French nuclear umbrella to include Poland. At the same time, Tusk stressed that the Polish-French treaty is not an alternative to the alliance with the United States. “We need both the United States and a strong European Union“, he pointed out.

In addition, Tusk said that the two countries would undertake joint initiatives aimed at achieving peace in Ukraine, but did not reveal further details.
