The US sanctions that blocked the construction of the Paks 2 nuclear power plant in Hungary, implemented by the Russian corporation Rosatom, have been officially lifted. This was announced by Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto in a post on the social network X (formerly Twitter), BTA reports.
“The US has lifted the sanctions that prevented the construction of the Paks 2 nuclear power plant. These politically motivated measures were imposed by the Biden administration shortly before Donald Trump took office,“ Szijjarto said.
The minister expressed gratitude to the new US administration, noting that the lifting of the sanctions paves the way for the implementation of a strategically important Hungary energy project.
According to him, the project will guarantee the country's long-term energy security by ensuring sustainable and predictable electricity supplies.
The Paks 2 nuclear power plant is an extension of the existing Paks 1 power plant, which has been operating since 1982 and is located on the banks of the Danube River. The plans envisage the construction of two new nuclear power units of the VVER-1200 type, generation “3+“, developed by the Russian “Rosatom“.
