Representatives of the Green Party are increasingly facing threats and insults in the German federal state of Thuringia and are being forced to give up party activity. This is reported by the magazine Der Spiegel, referring to a letter from two local politicians from the city of Gotha to the party leadership, which it has.

“This letter is a desperate cry for help, because we no longer know what to do“, Matthias Kaiser and Felix Kalbe say in it. “More and more party members are giving up active party life. More and more party members are realizing that being “Green“ in Thuringia means facing obstacles in your professional and everyday activities. "Fear is starting to spread," Der Spiegel quotes excerpts from the letter dated July 16.

Kaiser and Kalbe stressed that it is becoming increasingly difficult for their party's representatives to be politically active at the local level. They claim that being a member of the Greens outside the large cities of Thuringia is becoming dangerous. According to them, the previously observed negative attitude towards the Greens "is turning into bottomless hatred." During the previous election campaigns in 2024, insults and spitting in the streets were "the norm," the article says.

In 2025, as the politicians explained, the situation "has worsened even more." Thus, on February 20, shortly before the early parliamentary elections in Germany, an attack was carried out on the office of the Green Party. According to them, there were attacks on party representatives. The authors of the letter accuse the state authorities of inaction and call for action. Kaiser and Kalbe turn to the federal leadership of the party with a request for help, otherwise they note that they may refuse the presence of the party in the eastern federal states of Germany, Der Spiegel summarizes.

In the elections for the Thuringian Landtag, held on September 1, the parties of Germany skeptical about support for Ukraine - “Alternative for Germany“ and “Sahra Wagenknecht“ achieved huge success - Alliance for Reason and Justice (BSW). In the Thuringian elections, the AfD won a landslide victory, winning 32.8% of the vote, and for the first time in its history came first in a state election in the Federal Republic of Germany. The Christian Democratic Union (CDU) came in second with 23.6% of the vote. The BSW party came in third with 15.8% of the vote, followed by the Left Party (13.1%).

The Social Democratic Party (SPD) also entered parliament, but only won 6.1% of the vote. The Greens failed to enter the state parliament with 3.2% of the vote, as did the Free Democratic Party (SPD), which won only 1.1%.
