Deposits of 57 million barrels of oil worth about $4 billion have been discovered in Turkey. This was announced by Energy Minister Alparslan Bayraktar in an interview with the “Anadolu Agency“, BTA reports.
One of the most significant new deposits is located in the Diyarbakir region, with forecasts indicating that production could reach between 4 and 6 million barrels. At the same time, exploration of natural gas deposits in the Black Sea is also progressing, the second phase of the exploration should be completed next year. The underwater deposits are expected to meet the energy needs of 8 million households.
Minister Bayraktar stressed that Turkey has taken key steps in extracting energy resources:
“We have discovered 75 billion cubic meters of natural gas in three separate deposits. These resources can cover the country's needs for a year and a half, or even for 4-5 years, depending on consumption“, he noted.
In addition to the discoveries at the local level, Turkey is also undertaking humanitarian actions. Starting August 2, natural gas from Azerbaijan will reach the Syrian city of Aleppo via the Turkish city of Kilis. In addition, Turkey will support Syria with 900 megawatts of electricity, which will cover the needs of approximately 1.6 million households.
The country's energy strategy also includes the return of the second floating drilling platform from the Far East, planned for December 2027.
