NATO has begun work to coordinate regular deliveries of large-scale arms packages to Ukraine as part of its new financial plan “Priority Ukraine Requirements List – PURL”, reports “The Associated Press“.
The first shipment, worth 500 million euros ($578 million), was announced by the Netherlands. According to Dutch Defense Minister Ruben Brekelmans, the aid will include air defense equipment, ammunition and other military equipment, much of which was purchased from the United States.
Two more deliveries are planned by the end of the month. According to NATO, they will be tailored to the most pressing needs of the Ukrainian army on the battlefield and will be sent to specific locations. “The military supply packages will be prepared quickly and sent regularly”, the alliance said.
According to a UN analysis, air defense systems are of the utmost importance, as Russian air strikes in the rear of Ukraine have led to the deaths of more than 12,000 civilians since the beginning of the invasion in February 2022.
On the front line, about 1,000 km long, Russia is making slow but significant progress. Russian forces are currently leading an offensive on the strategic city of Pokrovsk in eastern Ukraine, which could become a springboard for deeper penetration into Ukrainian territory.
NATO military assistance is provided mainly by European members and Canada, with a significant portion of the equipment purchased from the United States. The American military has larger reserves and more effective weapons than other allies. At the same time, the Donald Trump administration is currently not providing military assistance to Ukraine, the AP recalls.
According to the Kiel Institute, from the beginning of the war until June 2025, European Union countries have provided Ukraine with military assistance worth 72 billion euros.
Last Friday, Germany announced that it would send two more Patriot air defense systems - American-made - in the coming days.
