Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet has officially nominated US President Donald Trump for the Nobel Peace Prize, Cambodian news agency AKP reports, BTA reports.
In a letter to the Norwegian Nobel Committee, Hun Manet highlighted Trump's historic contribution to promoting world peace. He said the nomination reflects both his personal gratitude and the appreciation of the Cambodian people for the US president's key role in stabilizing tensions along the Cambodian-Thai border.
The prime minister noted that Trump has demonstrated exceptional qualities in peacefully resolving conflicts through visionary and innovative diplomacy. This was most clearly demonstrated on July 26, when the president held telephone conversations with the leaders of both countries, which led to an immediate and unconditional ceasefire in the most serious military conflict between Cambodia and Thailand in recent years.
The two countries have a long-standing unresolved border dispute.
"Trump's timely intervention prevented a potentially devastating conflict, saved lives and created the conditions for the restoration of peace between Cambodia and Thailand," Hun Manet also pointed out.
The prime minister added that this was just one example of Donald Trump's efforts to reduce tensions in some of the most risky regions in the world. According to him, the former president's pursuit of peace through diplomacy is fully consistent with the ideals of Alfred Nobel - to distinguish individuals who contribute to international brotherhood and peace.
