French Foreign Minister Jean-Noel Barrot arrived in Greenland yesterday evening on a visit to express France's solidarity with the Greenlanders, whose territory is the subject of American ambitions, the French Foreign Ministry said, quoted by Agence France-Presse and BTA.
Barrot arrives in Greenland three days after Danish television reported that at least three Americans linked to US President Donald Trump had conducted influence campaigns in Greenland.
Denmark, whose territory is Greenland, summoned the US chargé d'affaires to demand explanations.
Barrot's visit will continue today.
"This trip will allow us to underline the depth of our bilateral friendly relations and will testify to France's solidarity with Denmark, Greenland and the Greenlandic people, in the face of current challenges," the French Foreign Ministry said in a statement.
French President Emmanuel Macron visited Greenland in mid-June to express Europe's solidarity with the Greenlandic people. Macron criticized Donald Trump's ambitions to annex Greenland to the United States.
