Human rights lawyers have filed a case against an Israeli soldier of German origin for his alleged involvement in the targeted killing of unarmed Palestinian civilians in Gaza, reports "Reuters", BTA reports.
The European Center for Constitutional and Human Rights and three Palestinian human rights groups said they had filed a criminal complaint with the German federal prosecutor against an Israeli Defense Forces sniper.
According to the Center, the 25-year-old soldier was born and raised in Munich and had a registered residence in Germany until recently, but it could not be confirmed that he had dual citizenship.
In his complaint The 130-page report, which was released by the Center for Human Rights, said the groups presented evidence, including research and audio-visual recordings, that the soldier belonged to the so-called "Ghost Squad" of the 202nd Parachute Battalion. According to the information gathered, members of this unit have been deliberately killing civilians in Gaza.
The human rights groups said they had documented targeted sniper fire near the "Al-Quds" and "Nasr" hospitals. in Gaza between November 2023 and March 2024, adding that similar legal proceedings against members of the same unit are also underway in France, Italy, South Africa and Belgium.
The case was filed under German law, which allows prosecutors to prosecute international crimes if the defendants were born in Germany or are German citizens.
"There should be no double standards - even if the suspects are members of the Israeli armed forces," stressed Alexander Schwarz, a lawyer for the European Center for Constitutional and Human Rights.
