Osteoporosis prevention is important, but underestimated - 1

The prevention and treatment of osteoporosis in our country remain alarmingly underestimated, and the disease is the third most socially significant in the world – after cardiovascular and oncological diseases. This was said in an interview with Horizont by Dr. Vladislav Andonov, an orthopedist and spine surgeon at the University Specialized Orthopedic Hospital in the capital's Gorna Banya district. According to studies cited by him, women are more often affected by osteoporosis and about 5 times more at risk of spinal fractures, which increase the risk of death.

Although less often, men also suffer from osteoporosis, especially smokers and regular alcohol drinkers, explained Dr. Vladislav Andonov. The disease requires great commitment on the part of the patient, but also on the part of the specialists treating him – endocrinologists and rheumatologists, as well as relatives who care for a person in case of complications.

Most often, fractures of the femoral neck occur, and then the mortality rate is very high, since elderly people are usually affected. Other affected areas are the vertebrae and the forearm, added Dr. Andonov. The main problem is that the disease is understood after complications appear.

The best prevention, according to Dr. Andonov, includes physical activity that is pleasant for a person, such as walking and running. Also, a diet rich in protein and omega 3 fatty acid products.

Regular check-ups are important.
