There is a danger to the "Eleshnitsa" dam. to overflow if the rainfall is longer and more abundant, reports BNT.
The reason is that one of the large facilities in Varna has been waiting for repair for nine years.
"Hazelnut" is one of the large dams in the Varna Region with a volume of 10 million cubic meters. The road between Dolni Chiflik and Dulgopol passes by it.
In the worst case, the villages of Grozdevo and Nova Shipka, which are located along the Kamchia River, could be potentially threatened, explained Milen Iliev, chief expert from the Varna Regional Administration.
Heavy rain in 2015 broke the dam's spillway slab and since then villages and roads in the region have been at risk.
Iliev pointed out that the facility is currently in a rather critical condition. From 2018 until today, a building permit has been issued, the term of which expires on October 28 of this year. However, construction and installation work has not yet started. In case of heavy rains, this collapse of the facility will continue, which leads to danger, the expert pointed out.
According to calculations of "Irrigation systems" the repair of the Eleshnitsa dam spillway; will cost over 800,000 BGN.
The Manager of "Irrigation Systems" - Varna Georgi Marcenkov stated that it is planned that the repair and restoration activities will begin as soon as possible.
The responsible institutions do not give an explanation why nothing has been done to repair "Eleshnitsa" for nine years. Duty of "Irrigation Systems" is to monitor the dam. As early as 2023, the District Administration sent letters about taking emergency measures. Prescriptions have also been issued.
Martsenkov explained that one was for updating the dam's emergency plan and it was completed on time. The second prescription was being strictly followed up to the present time. It is to maintain the control elevation of 53.28 meters or 4 million cubic meters until the spillway is repaired.
Employees of "Irrigation Systems" - Varna constantly monitor the level and volume of the "Eleshnitsa" dam, so that measures are taken in a timely manner so that the dam does not overflow or the wall is compromised.
Inspections of the dams in Varna continue. So far, the facilities in the municipalities of Suvorovo, Valchi dol and Vetrino have been inspected, and no problems have been found there.
