„Repeal of the hasty decision to liberalize the electricity market is a battle that the people's representatives of the “BSP for Bulgaria” carried through to the end. This was done in order to protect Bulgarian households and thus prevented the increase in the price of electricity from July 1, which was expected.“ This was stated by BSP MEP and candidate for a new term Tsvetelina Penkova on bTV Radio, quoted by the press center of the centenary.
In her words, Brussels did not put pressure on Bulgaria for the decision to liberalize the market, but such a commitment was undertaken independently by the management of the assembly. “No one in Brussels wants to put the citizens of any European country at risk, especially when we are in a situation of a rather serious crisis regarding electricity prices throughout Europe”, Penkova pointed out.
According to her, the lack of a long-term strategy regarding energy in Bulgaria is the reason for the unpredictability of the price of electricity in the country. “We have always fought for a balanced mix, which is composed of basic energy power, such as nuclear power, renewable energy sources and coal. In order to have such a balanced mix that guarantees predictability of prices, a serious energy plan is needed, which is currently lacking at the national level,“, explained Tsvetelina Penkova.
She defined the recognition of nuclear energy as a green, sustainable and strategic technology for Europe as a huge success. „Nuclear energy was a taboo topic that was not discussed in the last few decades in Europe, and in order to reach this decision, we made an extremely great effort to convince some of the more skeptical countries, such as Germany,”, emphasized Penkova.
According to her, this means that this sector has a future and will develop, and for Bulgaria - guaranteed lower electricity prices and the development of nuclear power, in which our country has serious traditions and a strategic advantage.
„Regarding the coal regions, there must be a plan of what, how and in what terms will happen. Coal energy is of strategic importance for Bulgaria's national security, as it is based on the only local raw material of which we have available quantities and we must protect it. More importantly, we must ensure the provision of people, working in this sector“, Penkova also said.
The BSP MEP commented on his second major success in drafting the first European legislation for startups. “It places startups in a legal framework as a legal entity in the European Union. This means that any young entrepreneur can implement such a project in any corner of the EU, has access to financing and is protected by law. Until now, this was not the case”, explained Penkova.
According to her, this is a policy that gives young people a real opportunity to find their fulfillment in Bulgaria.
