The war in Ukraine has seriously changed not only the security architecture on a global scale, but also the way of conducting military operations, as well as the tactics, methods and means used to implement the operations.

This was stated by President Rumen Radev at a meeting with Steven Covington – strategic adviser on the international activities of the Supreme Allied Commander of NATO, the press office of the head of state announced, quoted by BTA.

The guest is on an official visit to Bulgaria at the invitation of the Chief of Defense Admiral Emil Eftimov.

These new realities in the field of defense must be taken into account in the processes of modernization of the Armed Forces and the conduct of joint exercises, the president believes.

Rumen Radev and Steven Covington discussed the growing security risks of Russia's war in Ukraine, the transformation of NATO capabilities over the years, and the fulfillment of the Alliance's mission to guarantee the sovereignty and security of member states. The head of state pointed out that the implementation of projects related to the improvement of logistics and those that contribute to the acquisition of asymmetric and informational superiority and the strengthening of interoperability is increasingly important for strengthening the defense capacity.

“Bulgaria has invested significant financial resources in the major projects related to the modernization of the Air Force, the Navy and the Ground Forces, but in order to meet the defense capabilities of modern trends, it is necessary to work in a timely manner to introduce economically and financially profitable projects with great efficiency and asymmetric effect," said Rumen Radev. According to the president, an important factor in building defense capabilities is the training of personnel and the motivation of military personnel.

For his part, Stephen Covington stated that in the conditions of crises, unity in efforts to strengthen the defense and deterrence potential of NATO, as well as the support of the Alliance to guarantee the security of each member state, is of utmost importance.

The strategic adviser on international activities of the Supreme Allied Commander of NATO also met today with the acting Prime Minister Dimitar Glavchev. The two united around the thesis that NATO is at an important stage where the focus is shifting from crisis management to collective security.
