Are the guardrails on Bulgarian roads dangerous and can they prevent serious accidents? The questions arose after another serious accident on the “Maritsa” highway, in which a 19-year-old man died and a 13-year-old child is fighting for his life.
Then a bus crosses the dividing guardrail between the lanes, crosses into the oncoming traffic on the highway, breaks the side guardrail and falls off the road.
The topic in “Hello, Bulgaria” is commented on by Vladimir Todorov from the Association of Accident Victims. According to him, it is unacceptable for the iron bars to remain on the roadway for days after such an incident and for the perimeter to not be secured.
“The fact that a car has passed through two barriers indicates that the security is not effective, and the degree of containment is low. On highways, the guardrails should be of the highest class “ two-row and with pegs every two, not every 4 meters.”, the expert pointed out. Another option, in his opinion, suitable for high-speed roads, are concrete fences. “They are easier to install and have a long life. Their shape is such that it returns the vehicle to the lane”, Todorov explained.
