2/3 of companies already meet the requirements for working with the euro

Businesses warned citizens not to rush to exchange levs for euros, because currently this is done not at the fixed rate, but more expensively - at the "sell" rate of the respective bank or exchange office

A survey conducted among businesses shows that two-thirds of companies already meet the requirements for working with the euro. Technical adjustments to the software and cash registers are pending in retail trade and services, Vasil Velev from the Industrial Capital Association told BNR.

Businesses warned citizens not to rush to exchange levs for euros, because currently this is done not at the fixed rate, but more expensively - at the "sell" rate of the relevant bank or exchange office.

The software settings of the commercial activity management systems and cash registers will cost retailers about 46 million leva, so that after August 8 they can also write the value on the cash receipt in euros, but below the amount in leva, until the end of the year, explained Vasil Velev:

"From January 1, 2026 - back - first in euros and then - in leva. From February 1, 2026 - only in euros. This change must be made by over 460,000 units - that's how many devices are registered with the National Revenue Agency".

The business called on the authorities to regulate the possibility of purchasing euros at the fixed rate before the end of this year, in order to guarantee the return of the change in the new currency from 2026, because currently the exchange is at the banks' "sell" rate, which makes the euro more expensive. This is also the reason why the business called on citizens not to rush to exchange levs for euros.

"And let them not make deals on the street like they used to. That way they will be deceived. There is no reason for anyone to offer you a more favorable rate," Velev summarized.
