In the midst of summer, there is a risk that about half a million people will be left without water in August if the amount of precipitation in the country does not increase dramatically, experts warn. The levels of key dams in the country are alarmingly low, Nova TV reports.
Last summer, the levels of the “Kamchia“ and “Yasna Polyana“ dams, which provide drinking water for the Bulgarian Black Sea coast, were critically low. Now the situation there is more optimistic. Currently, the “Kamchia“ dam is 43 percent full.
At “Yasna Polyana“ the level is just over 50 percent of the useful volume.
The „Ticha“ dam, on which the people of Shumen rely, is 41 percent full.
Irrigation problems in Central Bulgaria may be caused by the „Koprinka“ and „Zhrebchevo“ dams. „Koprinka“ is 37 percent full, and at „Zhrebchevo“ the useful volume is only 26 percent of capacity.
The „Iskar“ dam, which provides drinking water for Sofia, is almost 80 percent full.
And in Northwestern Bulgaria, where rainfall is low, the good news is that the „Srechenska Bara“ dam is nearly 94 percent of its useful volume.
