In recent years, the production of new euro coins has generally been worth around two billion euros per year. The authorized production for 2025 was 2.17 billion, but in 2023 the figure was much higher - 2.6 billion due to Croatia's accession to the eurozone, notes the German agency DPA.

For the coming year, production of coins worth 1.9 billion euros for everyday use is planned, as well as coins with numismatic value for over 511 million euros.

Germany produces the largest amount of coins

In 2026, the largest number of coins will be minted in Germany again - worth 558 million euros. The coins with numismatic value that will be produced will be worth 203.5 million.

In second place in coin production is France with 342 million euros, Spain is third - with coins worth 299 million euros.

The new member of the eurozone, Bulgaria, plans to mint coins worth a little more than 164 million euros - almost exclusively for everyday use.

Are cents losing value?

In Germany, the relatively expensive one- and two-cent coins will continue to be produced - unlike the United States, where, after 230 years, the production of one-cent coins was discontinued in November this year. Companies in the United States are urged to round prices to the next value of a five-cent coin.

Similar requirements exist in some countries in the eurozone - for example, in Finland. Rounding rules also exist in the Netherlands, Slovakia, Ireland, Italy, Belgium and Estonia.

In Germany, in March 2025, the Bundesbank came up with a proposal for rounding amounts, which would make the existence of one and two cent coins meaningless. However, it was never implemented, writes DPA. The explanation - in retail trade, unrounded prices are an important tool in the fight for customers. The abolition of small euro coins can only be approved at the European level, the German news agency points out.
