Discussions in the European Parliament on approving the trade deal between the United States and the European Union may resume after tensions over Greenland have eased, European Parliament President Roberta Mezzola said, quoted by the Belgian news agency Belga, BTA reported.

Two days ago, the European Parliament's trade committee decided to suspend work on the EU-US trade deal in response to US President Donald Trump's repeated threats over Greenland.

After threats of new US tariffs on EU countries were withdrawn and Trump ruled out the possibility of taking over Greenland by military force, the parliament can move forward, Mezzola said.

Leaders of political groups in the trade committee will meet on Monday, January 26, to discuss the next steps.

Metzola stressed that she was pleased that "coolness has prevailed". "We have not made any concessions regarding the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Greenland and Denmark. We have made it clear that they are not for sale," she said.

EU leaders held an emergency summit last night in response to the US president's latest statements on Greenland. The main topics of the meeting were EU-US relations and how the union will adapt to the next three years of Trump's administration.
