Global sales of electric vehicles will increase by 25% by the end of 2025, with every fourth car sold being electric, the International Energy Agency (IEA) has predicted.
“Global sales of electric vehicles are expected to grow by 25% by 2025, similar to the growth rate seen in 2024. As a result, sales of electric vehicles will peak at 20 million worldwide. Although sales volumes may be affected by economic and political uncertainty, more than one in four vehicles sold in 2025 is expected to be electric“, the forecast says.
In the first quarter of 2025 More than 4 million electric vehicles were sold worldwide in the first three months of 2025, up 35% from the same period in 2024. This growth rate for the reporting period is the highest in two years. “In the first three months of 2025, 1 million more electric vehicles were sold than in the same period in 2024, with about 60% of them sold in China“, the IEA said.
In 2024, global sales of electric vehicles will increase by 25%, exceeding 17 million units. At the same time, the growth in sales of electric vehicles by 3.5 million units in 2024 compared to 2023 exceeded the total volume of electric vehicles sold in 2020.
At the same time, sales of electric vehicles in China in 2024 increased by almost 40%. And if in 2021 China accounted for half of global sales of electric vehicles, then in 2024 the share increased to almost two-thirds. “On a monthly basis, sales of electric vehicles in the country have exceeded sales of conventional cars since July 2024, bringing the share of electric vehicle sales to nearly 50% for the whole year“, the IEA added.
