Japan finds US tariffs regrettable - 1

The Japanese government is still investigating the details of US President Donald Trump's decision to raise tariffs on steel and aluminum to 50%, but believes the US administration's tariff measures are regrettable.

„We are aware of this statement about the increase in tariffs on steel and aluminum. Above all, we will monitor the specific content of the measures, which will be clarified later. "In any case, we consider the series of tariff measures by the US government to be extremely regrettable and urge their review," said Japanese Cabinet Minister Yoshimasa Hayashi, responding to a question about the impact of such a move by Washington on the economy and the progress of trade talks between Japan and the US.

In February, Trump imposed a 25% tariff on all steel and aluminium imports, which caused serious concern in Tokyo. Japan has repeatedly called on the United States to review these tariff measures, as well as other tariffs, including 25% on imports of cars and spare parts, and 24% on all imports from the country.

Japan has started trade negotiations with the United States and has already held several rounds, with Tokyo represented by Economic Revitalization Minister Ryosei Akazawa. The parties have not yet reached an agreement.

In late May, Trump announced an increase in tariffs on steel and aluminum from 25% to 50%.
