„Gazprom“ has filed a new lawsuit against „Naftogaz Ukraine“ in a Russian court, according to arbitration cases.
The lawsuit was filed the day before in the Arbitration Court of St. Petersburg and Leningrad Region. Details of the case are not provided in the file.
In January 2024, a Russian court had already banned „Naftogaz Ukraine“ from continuing the proceedings against „Gazprom“ in the International Court of Arbitration of the International Chamber of Commerce. Then the court ruled to collect from „Naftogaz“ in favor of „Gazprom“ about 150 million USD for failure to comply with the ban on continuing the proceedings. Later, the Russian holding company managed to increase the penalty to over 1.35 billion USD.
A representative of „Gazprom“ in court earlier noted that the company considers it impossible to guarantee the impartiality of the dispute in the International Court of Arbitration, given that „this judicial institution is located in France, the actual place of the proceedings is Switzerland, and two of the three appointed judges are also citizens of Switzerland and Sweden, all of which have imposed sanctions against Russia“ and are hostile.
Naftogaz has also initiated proceedings to forcefully collect $5 billion from Russia as part of the Hague Arbitration Court's award for compensation for allegedly lost assets in Crimea. Naftogaz filed a lawsuit against the Russian Federation in an international tribunal in September 2017, demanding compensation for damages in connection with the loss of assets in Crimea. The list of assessed assets included the subsidiary's production assets Chernomornaftogaz, gas in an underground storage facility in Crimea, as well as assets of other Naftogaz subsidiaries. The claim was later updated. Kiev asked for 10 billion USD.
