"Bulgarian society deserves stronger, fairer and more responsible decisions", the Trade Union Federation of Ministry of Interior Employees (SFSMVR) stated in a position regarding yesterday's decision of the Sofia City Court (SCC), which ruled to release the driver accused of causing the death of a police officer in Sofia on bail in the amount of 5,000 leva.

"According to the publicly disclosed information, the car was driven at 149 km/h in a speed limit of 90 km/h – speed, which in itself constitutes a serious violation and a demonstration of complete disregard for the rules of the road and the lives of other participants," the position of the SFSMVR states.

The federation adds that it is difficult for them to accept that such actions can be considered minor or accidental.

"It is even more difficult for us to accept that the life of a person who died while fulfilling his duty to society can be valued at a guarantee of 5,000 leva," the position also states.

The court's decisions directly affect the trust in justice, the sense of justice and security of citizens, as well as their behavior, the federation states.

They add that when the public interest and a person's life are affected, the measures should be proportionate to the severity of the consequences and the real public danger.

„SFSMVR stands firmly behind the family of our deceased colleague and all employees who risk their lives every day. Our duty is to protect their honor, memory and right to justice“, the position reads.

On December 1, a police officer and a pedestrian died in two incidents in the Northern Tangent area of Sofia. In the first incident, which occurred after 2 hours in the direction of Botevgrad, a Serbian truck hit a 61-year-old pedestrian, who died on the spot.

A patrol car of the "Specialized Police Forces" was sent to the scene. Then a car traveling at high speed hit the police car and the policeman, who was performing his duties at that moment, died on the spot.

The deceased policeman on the Northern Tangent was hit by a car at high speed, said Commissioner Vladimir Ivanov, Deputy Head of the "Traffic Police" Department at the State Department of Internal Affairs.
