Bulgaria supports the joint initiative of the UK and France, aimed at supporting the security of international shipping and protecting the freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz region, in accordance with international law and the provisions of the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS).
The initiative was discussed during a videoconference meeting of defense ministers, which was held in continuation of the meeting of state leaders dedicated to freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz in April, when a political agreement was reached to conduct a multinational defense mission. Representatives of over 40 EU member states, NATO and partner countries participated in the talks. The Ministry of Defense was represented by Brigadier General Lyubomir Monov, Director of the “Defense Policy and Planning“ Directorate.
Bulgaria expresses political support for the implementation of the planned multinational mission, which aims to support the safety of civil and commercial shipping, including through maritime security and mine clearance activities. Our country supports the efforts of the international community to de-escalate tensions and promote stability in the region, with the aim of ensuring global economic stability and energy security, with diplomatic means and political dialogue remaining a leading priority.
The participating countries will maintain coordination and transparent communication with all interested parties, and the activities of the mission will be carried out only if the necessary conditions are in place and in full compliance with international law and national legislation.
