The 4-year-old child, who became the first Bulgarian sick with measles in years, may have been vaccinated only according to documents. It became clear about the sick child a week ago, when it was explicitly announced that he had received the first mandatory vaccine against the infection.
This version was admitted to Nova TV by the head of the National Center for Infectious and Parasitic Diseases Prof. Iva Hristova.
According to the documents, the child has been vaccinated, but has no antibodies, Prof. Hristova explained. She emphasized that in between 1 and 5% of cases, people make a lot of antibodies against the disease for a short time, and then they disappear. There is also a possibility, but it cannot be proven, that the patient was vaccinated only on documents. “As long as they are single cases, there is no danger,", assured the expert.
Between 20 and 25% of ticks carry infections. The most dangerous of them is Lyme disease, explained Prof. Iva Hristova. According to her, however, only 10 out of 100 infected insect bites affect the human body. This means that only between 2 and 2.5% of bitten cases will become infected.
Hristova assured that spraying against insects has already been introduced throughout the country. In case of a bite, prophylaxis is possible, but given the small percentage of infection, it is not recommended. According to the specialist, this would lead to a jump in antibiotic resistance. The director of the National Center for Infectious and Parasitic Diseases explained that in the first few months of infection with Lyme disease, antibiotic treatment is very effective.
