Hillary Clinton is coming for a special meeting of the Global Initiative of Clinton (Clinton Global Initiative – CGI) on May 18, 2024 in Sofia. The event will bring together global leaders from the public and private sectors to identify ways to support the global advancement of women.
CGI is a community of established and emerging leaders working together to create and implement commitments to action – new, specific and measurable solutions to pressing global challenges. The meeting in Sofia is part of the “Path to September” of CGI – annual gatherings to establish new partnerships and initiatives ahead of the CGI 2024 Annual Meeting in New York on the 23 – September 24.
The host of the event in May in Sofia is Kiril Domuschiev, co-founder of the Domuschiev Impact initiative and member of the CGI Advisory Board. Domuschiev Impact was a partner of the 2022 and 2023 CGI meetings in the USA.
The forum on May 18 will bring together more than 200 leaders who will work together on initiatives to support women's leadership and fairer access to capital, employment and advancement. Stories of programs that have successfully supported women's entrepreneurship and ways to expand these efforts will be shared, and CGI's commitments currently driving progress in gender equality and representation in the workforce will be reviewed.
This year's event follows President Bill Clinton's visit in May 2023. Last year's meeting in Bulgaria helped spur action on the commitments affirmed at the CGI Annual Meeting in September 2023 in New York – including projects on food security and the launch of a new Global Malaria Center by Domuschiev Impact focused on bringing to market a competitive malaria treatment. Earlier visits of Hillary Clinton to Bulgaria
Hillary Clinton visited Bulgaria for the first time more than 25 years ago, coming to Sofia in October 1998 as the first lady of the USA. During the trip, she opened the conference “Women in the 21st century” in Sofia“, giving voice to ideas for equal rights and full female participation in Bulgaria and throughout Southeast Europe. She also called for Bulgaria's support for an international coalition to end the persecution of Kosovo Albanians, and the following year Bulgaria supported airstrikes that led to the withdrawal of Yugoslav forces from Kosovo.
As a senator, she is a leading supporter of Bulgaria's efforts to join NATO, voting in 2003 for our country's entry into the Alliance. As Secretary of State in 2012, Hillary Clinton again visited Sofia to meet with representatives of the Bulgarian government and expressed support for the country's energy security and independence.
