Prof. Hristo Matanov: Ferdinand brought us the yellow cobblestones and the opera - 1

„Bulgarians say goodbye to the past and to the propaganda that hovered around the second Bulgarian monarch – Ferdinand. This will not be easy and will continue for the next tens of years. Denying one mythology usually creates another. Ferdinand is a multifaceted and contradictory personality.

This was stated by the historian Prof. Hristo Matanov to NOVA NEWS.

In his words, after the Unification, the Great Powers did not accept Bulgaria, with few exceptions. Russia offers a very unfortunate bid – to the Georgian prince Mingreli, who at that time lived in Paris, sold his principality to Russia. They call him the Parisian boulevard, which is clearly unsuitable for the Bulgarian throne, the historian said.

"The delegation traveling in Europe stopped at the Austro-Hungarian lieutenant Ferdinand of Saxe-Coburg, perhaps because of his ancestry and his scientific work. Together with his brother, before he was elected Bulgarian prince, he traveled to the jungles of Amazonia. He published three volumes with materials on botany, ornithology. He imported the opera, the yellow paving stones, the first automobile. He is the first monarch to ride in an airplane – two years before the Bulgarians used the plane to participate in the Balkan War", explained Prof. Matanov.
