Ivaylo Kalfin: Our politicians should learn from what happened in Great Britain - 1

There is one lesson that can be taken from Britain. There, the Conservative government had been in a loop since Brexit - mistake after mistake, bad news, which was garnished with an exotic government of Boris Johnson. But Labor started talking about policies and concrete things. Keir Starmer said: "We will not be like the previous Labor party making empty promises without knowing how to deliver them. Everything was justified by a budget - where the resources would come from and how things would happen, which was a compelling narrative for people. If anyone in Bulgaria wants to take a lesson, this is the way.

This is what he told "Focus“ the former foreign minister, deputy prime minister and social minister Ivaylo Kalfin – executive director of the European Foundation for the Improvement of Living and Working Conditions.

He indicated examples of work on specific policies: "I would focus on several things and they are related to the quality of life in Bulgaria - something that interests people. The division between urban and suburban or small settlements - what is the employment, what do people do there, how do they live and what income do they have. Access to health services and the quality of education. These are topics that are important and I don't see them anywhere", pointed out Ivaylo Kalfin.

In his words, there is always a lot of tension, responsibility and a lot of stress in politics: "When political motives are confused with business motives or with personal interests, etc., then it always becomes very slippery on the political terrain.&ldquo ;

"Obviously, the DPS is experiencing this disease, which also passed through various other parties with different centers of power who want to influence the party's policy. It is obvious that there are also differences between these different centers, which either leads to a split or to severe upheavals in party life,” he said.

Parties are not sole proprietorships and should protect some public interest, Kalfin also believes. For him, party and political work has always been a collective exercise, not serving someone.

According to him, there will be no government in the country until real policies are started. "If you want to have a stable government and you have a majority, you have a detailed coalition agreement and everyone is responsible in it. If we see this happening in Bulgaria, we will also have governance,” he concluded.
