The Mountain Rescue Service (MSS) received a report of an incident in the area of Mount Kupena in Stara Planina. Lightning struck a man and a child at a height of over 2,000 meters, the service announced.
The incident took place in the early afternoon, and the signal was received at 13:35 at the regional directorate of the Ministry of Internal Affairs (MI). Immediately after receiving the information, the rescue teams were activated to provide assistance to the victims.
Kupena Peak, rising to 2169 meters above sea level, is part of the Troyanska Planina in the Middle Stara Planina. It is a popular destination among mountaineers, but during the summer season it is often subject to sudden atmospheric changes, including thunderstorms.
Representatives of the Mountain Rescue Service in Troyan confirmed that the weather conditions in the area are unfavorable, which further complicates the rescue operation. Bad weather not only creates risks for the victims, but also makes it difficult for rescue teams to access the scene of the accident.
Experts remind that during mountain hikes, especially in the high parts of the mountain, tourists should be extremely careful and follow the weather forecast. At signs of an approaching storm, it is advisable to immediately seek shelter at a lower elevation, away from isolated trees and open spaces.
