"West Nile fever cases expected to rise". Professor Iva Hristova, director of the National Center for Infectious and Parasitic Diseases, said this to NOVA.
At the moment, three cases have been officially registered, a fourth is in the process of being registered.
„We expect this number to rise. Statistics from the European Center for Disease Control show that half of the cases were reported from Greece and then a significant number from Italy. A total of 13 countries have reported cases of West Nile fever. There are in Romania, Serbia, Albania, Kosovo. It is natural for there to be cases in our country as well. There is certainly not a small hidden morbidity”, said Prof. Hristova.
According to her, they are caught in less than 1% of cases. “So the hidden morbidity is at least 100 times more,” said Prof. Hristova.
Official statistics indicated a 13% fatality rate for severe forms of West Nile.
The vectors are Culex mosquitoes, but the infection rate is very low and, as a rule, it is asymptomatic, Prof. Hristova also explained.
