Mexico judges end long strike against judicial reform - 1

Federal judges and court officials in Mexico have decided to end a long strike against President Andre Manuel Lopez's sweeping judicial reform Obrador, DPA reported, quoted by BTA.

The Federal Association of Judges said a majority of its members had voted to end a strike that had lasted nearly two months and to continue with "other forms of protest" against the controversial judicial reform. They will resume work on Wednesday.

The association called on the Supreme Court of the country to protect "fundamental rights" when it ruled on the reform "with the necessary speed and decisiveness".

According to the Mexican newspaper "Millenio" over 50,000 people participated in the strikes.

Left populist López Obrador's reform includes direct election of judges, including those of the Supreme Court. It was passed by Congress last month and signed by the president, who will be succeeded by his close ally Claudia Scheinbaum. She is likely to continue her mentor's policies, including reform.

Critics of the change fear that it will strengthen the influence of politics and drug lords on the judicial system, notes DPA.
