Tsvetelina Penkova was re-elected as vice president of the Group for the support of nuclear energy in the European Parli - 1

MEP Tsvetelina Penkova achieved another victory in the new mandate of European Parliament. She actively helped re-establish the Nuclear Power Support Group and set its key priorities for the new legislative mandate.

The group was originally created in 2021 and brought together MEPs from different political families from several countries. At the moment, MEPs from France, Bulgaria, the Netherlands, Belgium, Slovakia, Sweden, Slovenia and the Czech Republic are members of it, but representatives of other countries are expected to join it during this term.

„This group played a key role in achieving the successes we can boast of in 2019 – 2024. Thanks to our joint efforts, we were able to recognize nuclear energy as green and sustainable and include it in the list of strategic technologies in the European Reindustrialization Plan. I expect that in the current mandate we will continue to work actively to provide European funding for the sector.“, said Tsvetelina Penkova.

The ambition of the group is to continue to cooperate with the so-called a nuclear alliance that unites almost half of the member states in the Council of the EU. With joint efforts, these two initiatives aim to strengthen and strengthen the role of nuclear energy in the new mandate of the European institutions.

At its first meeting of the new political season, the group called on the future European Commission to make clear commitments to the development of the nuclear sector in Europe and set out 5 main priorities for its future work:

  • adoption of a clear Nuclear Energy Action Plan (PINC);

  • access to public and European funding for nuclear projects;

  • fostering the European nuclear industry through the newly established European Alliance for Small and Modular Reactors;

  • fair treatment of low-carbon hydrogen produced by nuclear power;

  • strengthening measures for new skills, research and innovation in the nuclear sphere.

The statement which contains these five main priorities, will be sent to the President of the European Commission and to the candidate for Commissioner for Energy.
