Devin brought together representatives at the regional and European level to discuss key topics related to energy security and economic development.

One of the leading figures at the meeting was Bulgarian MEP Tsvetelina Penkova – President of the European Energy Forum and First Vice-President of the Committee on Industry, Research and Energy in the European Parliament.

The leader of the BSP-United Left party, Dr. Lidiya Stoikova-Chorbanova, and the mayor of Devin Municipality, Zdravko Ivanov, took part in the discussion in the crowded hall in the town of Devin. Dr. Chorbanova placed a strong emphasis on the need to increase the health care budget and clearly stated the key importance of municipal hospitals so that all citizens can have access to quality health care. Mayor Ivanov emphasized the need for really working policies and solutions aimed at people.

Penkova stated: „Bulgaria has a unique opportunity to establish itself as a leader in energy, relying on innovation and its proven expertise. Only basic energy sources such as nuclear power can guarantee low prices for citizens. We fought for it to have a future in the EU and in Bulgaria”.

The MEP emphasized that our energy security depends on investments in the modernization of the electricity transmission network and the development of water resources. “The Smolyan region has a lot to offer in this direction and should be supported by the regional, national and European authorities.“, she added.

Penkova also emphasized the socio-economic problems in the country, stressing that the crises that Bulgaria is going through continue to have a heavy impact on the population. „After the multitude elections, the quality of life does not improve, young people flee the country, our economy stagnates, and the bills continue to mount. Immediate action is needed to achieve a better future for Bulgaria and this can only happen if people come out to exercise their right to vote,“ said the MEP.
