The Ambassador of RS Macedonia to Bulgaria Agnesa Russi Popovska will be replaced. This was reported at the beginning of the month by BGNES. The reason why Popovska will be recalled to Skopje is that before her departure for Bulgaria she was not heard by the parliamentary committee on foreign policy. In addition to Popovska, ambassadors from Brussels, London, Vienna, Prague, etc. are also returning to RS Macedonia. The proposal is from the legislative committee in parliament and is supported by the deputies from the ruling VMRO-DPMNE.
As is known, before the arrival of Popovska, who presented her credentials on October 10, 2022, RS Macedonia did not have its own ambassador in Bulgaria for approximately two and a half years. In April 2020, the mandate of the then representative of our southwestern neighbor, Marijan Gjorchev, expired.
It was only on September 9, 2022, that then-President Stevo Pendarovski signed a decree appointing Popovska as ambassador. She received her agrement in March of the same year. Bulgaria was the first country to recognize the independence of RSM in January 1992. and since then has been supporting Skopje economically, politically and militarily in very difficult times for it.
The Macedonian ambassador in Sofia is from a family of Bulgarians
The Ambassador of North Macedonia in Sofia - Agnesa Rusi Popovska, is of Bulgarian origin. Her roots are Bulgarian. Her mother is Konstanza Rusi and is of Bulgarian origin. She was born in Sofia and has Bulgarian citizenship and documents. The ambassador's mother has a twin sister - Pavlinka Hristovata, who is also a Bulgarian citizen and has Bulgarian documents.
The two sisters had a brother, Dimitar Alexandrov Georgiev, born in Sofia, lived in Sofia and died in Sofia in 1979.
Ambassador Agnesa Rusi's grandparents - Alexander and Veska, are also Bulgarian. Agnesa Popovska also has two first cousins in Bulgaria - Alexander and Mitko Georgievi.
Angesa Popovska has mentioned to her relatives that she has wonderful memories of the time spent in Bulgaria and the summer games with her cousins.
Agnesa Popovska is among the ambassadors that the government of Hristiyan Mickoski announced were appointed in violation of the procedure, because before her departure for Bulgaria she was not heard by the parliamentary committee on foreign policy.
The Mickoski government has adopted a policy of constant confrontation with Bulgaria with the aim of distancing North Macedonia from the EU. This counterproductive policy also includes systematic discrimination against citizens of North Macedonia with a Bulgarian identity.
From the developments in Skopje, it is not clear whether Mickoski wants to recall Ambassador Popovska from Sofia for procedural reasons, or solely because of her Bulgarian origin.
