Over 150 teams are working non-stop during the holidays to deal with the breakdowns caused by the heavy snow in Western Bulgaria. As of 6:00 p.m., a large part of the damage that occurred during the night has been repaired. Work will not stop until the power supply is fully restored.
The situation remains complicated in some settlements in the municipalities of Apriltsi, Troyan, Teteven, Lovech and around Samokov. In the Lovech region, the teams of ERM West and the state-owned Electricity System Operator (ESO) are working together to repair the damage. There are no serious breakdowns in Sofia, Pleven regions and Sofia city. Work is underway on separate overhead power lines supplying parts of the villa areas around the capital.
Repair activities are being hampered by impassable roads, fallen trees, strong winds and the icing of the wires as a result of the drop in temperatures.
About 95% of the network failures in Western Bulgaria are caused by tall trees falling on power lines, which ERM West does not have the right to remove because they are outside the easement zones. According to the Framework Agreement signed between the National Association of Municipalities in Bulgaria and the electricity distribution companies in the country, local authorities and the EDPs will work to change the ordinance in order to increase the easement areas of power lines. This will significantly reduce the accident rate and prevent long power outages.
