This is one of the best investments that a government can make for the future of future generations, said in the program "Face to Face" on BTV, Bulgarian Commissioner for Start-ups, Research and Innovation Ekaterina Zaharieva in connection with the convergence report published yesterday by the European Commission on Bulgaria, which states that our country is ready to adopt the euro from January 1, 2026.
The process is almost irreversible. There are still a few steps left, but we see no reason why this should not happen from January 1, 2026. I do not expect any country to be against it. I do not expect any problems in either the Council of the European Union or the Eurogroup, Zaharieva said.
We are monitoring the processes in Bulgaria, we are in constant contact with the Bulgarian government. It is normal for there to be protests, it is normal for there to be people who are not sure, it is important to dispel speculation with the explanatory campaign. Opponents of the euro speak with speculation, and we speak with facts. There is enough data on what happened in all the countries that have entered the eurozone. In the Baltic states, for example, there has been an increase in income by about 70% after the adoption of the euro. This increase is happening for the sake of more security and more predictability for investors, she pointed out.
According to the Bulgarian European Commissioner, the data show that the lowest increase in income in a country that has entered the eurozone is 68%, and the highest - 108%.
According to Ekaterina Zaharieva, there is no reason for prices to increase in our country when switching from lev to euro.
It is also very important for the government to create a mechanism to monitor that there is no speculation. I think the process will be smooth, there will be no difficulties with it. It is important that the information campaign is well organized, that it reaches smaller settlements, more visible groups, and that people feel calm. So far, I do not see any risks to the process, Zaharieva said.
