Ivaylo Mirchev: We did not do well with the explanatory campaign for the euro - 1

I hope that Bulgaria will go through without turbulent moments on its path to adopting the euro. This was stated in the program “120 minutes“ on bTV by the co-chair of “Democratic Bulgaria“ Ivaylo Mirchev. He gave an example of the protests against the introduction of the single European currency.

“There is one specific thing in Bulgaria - we did not do well with the explanatory campaign. And at the moment, the government is not doing well, even though there is a decision of the National Assembly for a real such campaign, and not with some videos on Youtube with 100 views“, added Mirchev.

The MP compared the situation with the COVID-crisis, when there was again a lack of information and this provided fertile ground for propaganda and disinformation:

"Vaccines were forced on people, although many of us knew that this was right and that is how it is done, but a large part of the people were scared and parties like “Vazrazhdane“ and pro-Russian organizations used these fears. We should not allow this now, the topic of the euro is much more favorable for something like this“.

Mirchev commented that there was “cow-like enthusiasm“ regarding the convergence reports on the euro: “It was written inside that Bulgaria has a problem with regulators, Bulgaria has a problem with the rule of law and the fight against corruption. That was the important thing, not that we formally meet the criteria. The big problem now is that an extremely large number of people elected with GERB and Peevski were elected to the regulators“.

According to him, a vote of no confidence in the ruling majority will not be proposed by their coalition “PP-DB“ before September 2025, because it is not in the country's interest. He admitted to a lack of consensus with “We continue the change“ regarding a specific date for submitting a vote of no confidence.

Mirchev commented that in order for the process of adopting the euro to go smoothly, a regular government is necessary. He gave an example of the regulators, who, in his opinion, are dependent on the executive branch. “The process could collapse if there is instability in the state. We will not be the ones to cause this instability. We will have to wait a few months“, he added.

According to him, Boyko Borisov “wants to get out of Peevski's clutches“ and that is why the vote may pass. He added that a new government with them within this parliament is impossible. Mirchev pointed out that new elections are needed for their party to return stronger.

The co-chairman of “Democratic Bulgaria“ said that they have not yet commented on possible candidates for the upcoming presidential elections.
