The Head of State Rumen Radev will talk today with the President of Uzbekistan Shavkat Mirziyoyev at the “Kuksaroy“ residence in Tashkent, BTA reported. The Bulgarian President is on an official visit to the country.

First, Rumen Radev and the Prime Minister of the country Abdulla Aripov will pay tribute to the Independence Monument in the “New Uzbekistan” park, after which a solemn ceremony will be held to welcome the Bulgarian Head of State at the “Kuksaroy” residence by the President of Uzbekistan Shavkat Mirziyoyev. Rumen Radev and Shavkat Mirziyoyev will hold a “private” meeting and will lead the plenary talks between the two official delegations.

The two presidents will sign a joint statement to strengthen bilateral political dialogue and cooperation in the fields of economy, trade, investment, connectivity, culture and educational exchange. During the visit, a cooperation program for the period 2026-2027 will be signed between the Ministries of Foreign Affairs of the two countries and a memorandum of understanding between the Municipality of Sofia and the Municipality of Tashkent.

The Bulgarian head of state will participate in the high-level panel of the Tashkent International Investment Forum, which will be opened by the President of Uzbekistan. The event, which has been held since 2022, brings together investors from all over the world to promote cooperation. During the visit, President Radev will also welcome participants in the Bulgarian-Uzbekistan Business Forum. In Tashkent, Rumen Radev will meet with Tanzila Norbayeva - Chairperson of the Senate of the Oliy Majlis (Supreme Assembly of the Republic of Uzbekistan).

Bulgaria and Uzbekistan

On January 15, 1992, the Republic of Bulgaria recognized the independence of the Republic of Uzbekistan, and on September 12, 1992, diplomatic relations were established between the two countries. Bilateral relations are built on the basis of the Treaty on Friendly Relations and Cooperation between the Republic of Bulgaria and the Republic of Uzbekistan of June 24, 1998, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs states on its website.

Currently, about 15,000 citizens of Uzbekistan work in Bulgaria, and on May 18, 2025, an Agreement on Cooperation in the Field of Labor Migration was signed between the Association of Industrial Capital in Bulgaria and the Migration Agency of Uzbekistan, states the "Reference" department of BTA. The document lays the foundations for a long-term partnership between the two countries, aimed at facilitating and regulating the processes of hiring workers from Uzbekistan in Bulgaria.

Last meeting between the presidents of the two countries

In September 2017 The presidents of Bulgaria and Uzbekistan, Rumen Radev and Shavkat Mirziyoyev, held a meeting in New York within the framework of the 72nd session of the UN General Assembly. During the talks, the two discussed the possibilities for promoting economic exchange and mutual investments between the two countries, the BTA "Reference" department reports.

Rumen Radev stated Bulgaria's interest in being part of the dynamic economic development in the Central Asian region. Shavkat Mirziyoyev noted the need for joint companies from the two countries to promote the export of raw materials and products with higher added value from Uzbekistan to the EU. The common position of the two heads of state is that all initiatives should be used to improve connectivity between Europe and Asia. The possibility of Uzbek students receiving higher education at Bulgarian universities, as well as the promotion of tourism, was also discussed.
