“Exactly a year and a few months ago, GERB rejected our bill, which proposed disciplinary liability for not wearing body cameras“. He announced this in an interview for the show “This Morning” on bTV Bozhidar Bozhanov from PP-DB regarding the request of the Minister of the Interior Daniel Mitov to introduce a change in the rules so that not wearing and not activating a body camera would become a disciplinary penalty.
The reason for the new measures is the death of 36-year-old Yavor Georgiev in Varna and the suspicions of police violence against him.
„Now that the cart is turned around, there are many legislative initiatives, but when it was time to make this decision, they (GERB) voted against“, added Bozhanov.
He announced that PP-DB will again submit the texts proposed more than a year ago on police body cameras.
„The problem with police violence is chronic, there have been so many examples over the years. There are reports, there are hearings in parliament and in the end very little changes“, Bozanov commented.
The PP-DB MP reminded of the footage of police violence during the Largo protests in Sofia in 2020 and the lack of consequences for those responsible for this.
“Now is another case – the head of the ODMVR, appointed by Kalin Stoyanov, is another one who exploded at the hands of Daniel Mitov. We had a call to him from the very beginning – to replace all the heads of “DPS – Novo nachalo“. That's what happened in Haskovo, that's what's happening now in Varna“, said the PP-DB MP.
